- Information on specific tests or criteria
The École internationale de Differdange et Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE) is a Luxembourg public school, open to all and with no registration fees.
It operates according to the model of accredited European Schools, one of whose core principles is teaching each pupil's mother tongue or dominant language as their first language (L1).
Language sections
The EIDE offers three language sections:
- German-speaking (secondary only)
- English-speaking
- French-speaking
In accordance with the principle of European Schools, pupils are enrolled in the section corresponding to their mother tongue or dominant language, where one exists.
SWALS students
When the section corresponding to the student's mother tongue/dominant language is not available, the student is generally enrolled in one of the language sections (DE, EN or FR).
They then study their mother tongue/dominant language as L1, as part of the SWALS (Students Without a Language Section) programme.
Determination of the first language (L1)
The determination of L1 is not left to the parents' choice: it is the responsibility of the school principal.
L1 must correspond to the mother tongue or, for multilingual pupils, to the dominant language, i.e. the language in which they have the best command of.
In case of doubt or dispute, the Headteacher shall determine the L1 on the basis of:
- the information provided in the registration form by the legal representatives,
- comparative language tests, organised and supervised by EIDE teachers.
These tests can be carried out at any age, including in nursery school.
Definitive decision
The determination of L1 at the time of enrolment is, in principle, final.
