Multilingual school and choice of languages

At EIDE, students have several choices in terms of languages. The school offers three language sections in secondary: French, English and German.

In secondary, students choose:

  • The language section: New students choose their language section from French, English and German. Apart from language lessons and physical education (which are always taught in Luxembourgish), all subjects are taught in the language of the section.

  • Language 1 (language taught at mother tongue level): Students have the choice between French, English, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian for their first language.

  • Language 2 (language taught at first foreign language level): Students also choose their language 2 (L2) from French, English and German. L2 must be different from L1.

  • Language 3 (language taught at second foreign language level): Students also choose a third language (L3) from among French, English, German and Portuguese. Language 3 must be different from L1 or L2.

  • Language 4: L4 is taught as an option from 4th year secondary (S4). It may be any language not studied as L1, L2 or L3. In S4, the L4 course is beginner level course.

Important

One of the L1 or L2 languages must be the language of the section chosen: French for pupils who have chosen the French language section, English for pupils who have chosen the English language section and German for pupils who have chosen the German language section.

Luxembourgish compulsory for all

Learning Luxembourgish (oral communication) as an integration language is compulsory for all pupils in the observation cycle (S1-S3) of secondary school, the vocational preparatory way and ACCU classes.
