An international public school: why and for whom?
With the establishment of an international public school in the south of the country, the Ministry of National Education has responded to the growing diversity of the school population. The state must provide a public education system in which every student has a chance to succeed, regardless of the language spoken at home.
International education programmes already existed in public secondary schools in the central region, but before the creation of EIDE, this had not yet been the case in the southern region. The structural development of the economy in the south of the country and the establishment of the University of Luxembourg in Belval, however, have created an increased demand for international schooling for children. High-quality education is an important factor in the decision of a company, foreign investor or scientific expert to settle in Luxembourg.
The École internationale Differdange et Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE) is aimed at children and young people from immigrant backgrounds, as well as any other pupils wishing to develop in an international context. It primarily targets young people from Differdange and Esch-sur-Alzette, as well as from the southern region of the country. In addition to its efforts to integrate foreign pupils who will remain in the country, the international school's programme is tailored to the needs of young people who are temporarily residing in the Grand Duchy and who will continue their education in another country. EIDE is open to all pupils, with no registration fees.
